Our History
The Armenian Apostolic Church is the national church of the Armenian people. Part of Oriental Orthodoxy, it is one of the most ancient Christian institutions, with tradition linking it to the missionary work carried out by Apostles Bartholomew and Thaddeus of Edessa in the 1st century.
St. Mary’s Armenian Apostolic Church is part of that long-lasting tradition. It was founded in 1975 to service Armenian immigrants that started to arrive Southern California in great numbers in the 1890s. Much of this immigration was caused by the widespread massacres of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire, when an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were killed.
